For the first time in the UK, BSL interpreters will be able to achieve the DPSI Law qualification.
In January 2026, DPSI Online, in collaboration with Patricia Westbury, will launch the first DPSI Law course adapted specifically for BSL interpreters. This course leads to the nationally recognised DPSI Law qualification, awarded by iCQ Awards.
Historically, the DPSI Law has been available only to spoken-language interpreters. This new pathway marks an important step in widening access to established legal interpreting qualifications for registered BSL interpreters who wish to work in legal settings.
A course adapted for BSL interpreters
While maintaining the standards and integrity of the DPSI Law qualification, the course has been carefully adapted to reflect the professional and linguistic realities of BSL interpreting. Delivery will be fully online, with live sessions led by an experienced BSL tutor.
The course is designed for BSL interpreters who want to:
-
work in courts, police interviews, and other legal contexts
-
hold a nationally recognised legal interpreting qualification
-
expand their professional scope within the justice system
