IMPORTANT: The CIoL has decided to withdraw this qualification in 2022.

To work for the police interpreters should consider the DPSI Law or the DCI Law level 6 qualifications.

 

Alternative 1

Level 6 DPSI Law course

One-to-One course that includes the role and work of an interpreter in legal settings. Lessons cover topics such as police powers and procedures, witness statement taking, courts and tribunals, probation and prisons and specialised legal terminology.

Sessions with your tutor are flexible and organised between you both. These will improve your accuracy in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, sight translations and written translation so that you feel confident tackling the exams.

Alternative 2

Level 6 DCI Law course

This Portfolio based course is at par with the DPSI Law. It includes the same course materials (role of an interpreter in legal settings; police powers and procedures, witness statement taking, courts and tribunals, probation and prisons, immigration, and specialised legal terminology). Sessions with your tutor will improve your accuracy in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, sight translation and written translations. These sessions will be evaluated continuously.

Sessions are flexible and organised between you and your language tutor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get qualified to interpret for the police now that this qualification is being withdrawn?

All other police forces in England accept the DPSI Law and DCI Law qualifications.

These actually prepare and qualify you to work in a wider scope of legal settings, not just police.

Is this course suitable for beginners?

Level 6 courses are not suitable for beginners.
