About this Course


This 1-year preparatory course combines the basic theoretical concepts and techniques of the field of translation with translation practice to provide students with a solid foundation of translation knowledge and experience to sit the Diploma in Translation exam.

It includes a mix of live and on-demand webinars covering theoretical concepts in translation, 18 translation assignments covering all 3 units of the exam and Skype tutorials with a qualified and experienced tutor in your language combination to feedback on your assignments.

Learners will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course (mandatory completion of all assignments and attendance of at least 85% required).

This online preparatory course is ideal for:

  • Bilingual individuals who wish to pursue a career in translation, but do not have experience in this field;
  • Candidates who are planning to sit the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL) DipTrans exams;
  • Those who wish to study in their own time and around other commitments.

  • Introduction to Translation Studies
  • Translation Theory I
  • Translation of General Papers
  • Ethics for Translators

Term 2 (May – July)

  • Translation Theory II
  • Specialised Translation I (Technology, Business and Literature)

Term 3 (October to December)

  • Specialised Translation II (Science, Social Science and Law)
  • Introduction to Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT tools)
Course Requirements
  • Excellent writing skills in your native language and near-native skills in your second language;
  • Discipline for autonomous learning and an ability to conduct autonomous study and research;
  • Reliable internet access and the latest version of Skype.
Course Price £1650 (payment in instalments is available at £650 per term)
Exam Information The exam is booked directly with the CIoL. The CIoL DipTrans exam is divided into three units:

  • Unit 1: General translation
  • Unit 2: Semi-specialised translation (A: Technology, B: Business, C: Literature)
  • Unit 3: Semi-specialised translation (D: Science, E: Social Science, F: Law)

Please note that you will have to choose one option for each of the semi-specialised texts on the exam day.
