The Introduction to Public Service Interpreting in the UK guide was made available on our Resources page in August 2017. It is aimed at students who are currently enrolled on an interpreting course or who have finished their studies and are at the beginning of their career as community or public service interpreters.
This guide was produced with the goal to provide clear and concise information about this profession, as well as an overview of how the system is set up. We recognise that future students are uncertain about how to access the profession and need guidance and advice. This guide therefore aims to answer questions from “where do I start?” and “what qualifications do I need?” to “how do I take my interpreting career even further?” It covers course providers, exam resources, work providers, business skills, agency practices, ethical considerations, career progression and lifelong learning, among other topics. We’re hopeful that it will give beginners and students a clear understanding of the current market, the skills and standards required, and some tips on starting and furthering their public service interpreting careers.
