DPSI Course – English Law Intensive 2017

Who is this course for? This course is suitable for candidates who have applied directly to the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL) to sit the DPSI English Law exams but missed our October enrolment deadline for the full 8-month DPSI Law Course. Due to high demand for the DPSI Law course, we are offering this  new intensive preparatory course to help you prepare the necessary specialised terminology in a fast track environment and still get ready for your exam.
When does the course run? This 6-week intensive course will run from May 5 until June 10, in time to take the CIoL exam.

• Applications can be sent to us from January 2017;
• The course payment and enrolment deadline is April 15, 2017.

Am I ready to start this course? All candidates who booked the exam with the CIoL can apply for this course.
What do I need? • Native and near-native levels in both English and the other language;
• Some interpreting experience (voluntary or otherwise);
• Ability to conduct autonomous study (research and weekly assignments);
• Reliable internet access and the latest version of Skype for your online tutorials.
What will I learn? • You will become familiarised with both the English legal system and the legal system of the other language country;
• You will learn other relevant topics (see topics covered below and compare with the topics set up by the CIoL);
• You will practice interpreting skills with a dedicated language tutor, doing role-plays, sight translations and written translations into both English and the other language, which will be marked according to the National Qualifications Framework Level 6.

• 12 hours with an experienced tutor covering the modules and discussing topics;
• 12 hours with a language tutor practising consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, sight translations and receiving feedback on written translations;

• Complimentary copy of The Interpreters’ Manual upon completion of the course;
• Certificate of completion (100% attendance is mandatory).

• Module 2 – Police Powers & Procedures
(Police Powers to Stop and Search/Powers to Enter and Search Premises, Identification of Suspects/Arrest & Caution/Interviews, Bail: Conditional, Unconditional, Breach of Bail, Suspect’s Rights/Duty Solicitors, The Role of the Interpreter at the Police Station)

• Module 3 – Courts
(Court Structure for England and Wales, Magistrates/Crown & County Courts/Tribunals, Sentencing/Legal Terminology, Role of the Interpreter in Court)

• Module 4 – Probation
(National Probation Service, Types of Probation Orders/Pre-Sentence Reports/Alternative Sentencing, Terminology/Glossary of Abbreviations, Role of the Interpreter in Probation)

• Module 5 – Immigration
(UK Visas & Immigration – previously UKBA; Home Office/Asylum/NASS Support, First Tier Tribunal – previously IAT, Human Rights/Specialised Terminology, Role of the Interpreter in Immigration Settings)

• Module 6 – Civil Law
(Tort/Employment/Family, Succession and Probate, Relevant Terminology)

• Module 7 – Local Government
(Housing/Benefits/Social Services, Relevant Terminology, Role of the Interpreter in the Community)
